How to inspect your cylinder

Why is it important to inspect an old cylinder:

  • Regular inspection of the cylinder can provide a warning of potential hazards.
  • If the old cylinder is more than 5 years old, the valve must be changed and pressure testing will be carried out to check if there is a leak (30 bar test).
  • If the old cylinder has dents in the body handle or foot: the structure risk may cause damage and leak, if the handle has dents it cannot protect the valve and therefore it will have a leak.
  • The GSB (Ghana Standard Board) requires that the old cylinders must be inspected periodically to maintain quality and cylinders and reassure the safety of the end-user.

How to inspect your cylinder at home:

  • Examine regulators, pressure relief valves and cylinder connections
  • Ensure that cylinders are free of corrosion, leakage, pitting, dents or gouges.
